Creating a question can be done by clicking on the Questions > Question bank > Add new question. If a question bank is not yet available or is not in the list, please contact the administrator.
A screen will appear with a few options:
Option | Explanation |
---|---|
Question Type | Choose a question type from the list. In the article 'Available question types' all question types are explained. |
Code | This is a free field that can be used for a code that is used within the organisation. |
Available for use in paper test | Is this question suitable for paper-based testing? Check here for more information: Paper test |
Available for practices and graded practices (formative) | Is this question available for practices and graded practices? When creating a blueprint for a formative practice or graded practice, you can only choose questions that are available for these tests. You cannot choose questions that are only available for summative exams. |
Available for exams (summative) | Is this question available for summative (final) exams? When creating a blueprint for a summative assessment, you can only choose questions that are available for summative assessments. You cannot choose questions that are only available for formative assessments. |
Language | The language of the question can be set to Dutch or English. The question itself won't be translated, but the surrounding text and punctation will be adjusted. |
Calculator available | This option makes a (scientific) calculator available to candidates for this question. |
Excluded questions (IDs) | After the question has been saved, this functionality becomes available in the 'Settings' of the question. This makes it possible to exclude other questions. This can be the case, for example, for questions that ask exactly the same thing, but in a slightly different way, or questions from which the introduction to one question gives away the answer to another question. Enter the question IDs of questions of which it's not desirable that they appear in the same test as the current question. When entering several question IDs, split them by a comma (see image below table). |
Once all options are set, click on 'Save question' to create the question. A screen will then pop up where the question itself can be edited (editor). The layout of this screen may depend on which question type is selected.
Add / edit content of question
In the editor one can place or edit the content of the question. On the left of the screen one can see all the elements of the question. In general a question exists of a text block and the template of the chosen question type.
Click on the 'Edit' button to edit the text block. The question and possible other information to answer the question can be placed here, e.g. the (prompt of the) question, images, tables and/or attachments. When no extra information needs to be given, we suggest one places the prompt of the question in the text block (see nr. 1 in the text block in the below image).
When a lot of information is given, it could be useful to place the actual question or a specific instruction apart from the information in the 'question prompt / fill-in instruction' (see nr. 2 in the below image).
The below image shows how the information will be presented if one places the information for the question in a separate text block and the actual question in the 'question prompt / fill-in instruction'.
When an attachment is needed for answering a specific question, one can add the attachment in the text block of the question. If an attachment needs to be available during the whole test, then add the attachment to the instruction text of the test (in the Settings of the test blueprint). See the article 'Test blueprint settings'. When an attachment is related to several questions, but not the whole test, one can use case texts, see for an explanation the article 'Case texts'.
Question settings
In addition to the content of the question, the number of points and the correct answer must be specified. The question settings can be edited by clicking on Settings on the left. Again, on the right of the screen, adjustments can be made for, among other things:
- the correct answer (key);
- any alternatives;
- the number of points that can be obtained with the question;
- the choice of the score type; this will affect how the points for this question are calculated (for more information, see the article 'Scoring types');
- the feedback on given answers or the entire question.
Once the content of the question has been added and the settings are correct, the ‘Save Question’ button can be clicked. The question will be given the status ‘Concept’. Only when the question has been ‘Approved’, the question can be included in tests (see article Question statusses). Who may change the status of a question is set differently per organization.
