Article Summary

Description

A blueprint is used to 'build' a test. It determines, among other things, which questions will be included in the test, how much time a candidate will get, what the score will be and what candidates will be allowed to see during and after an assessment.

One of the first choices that are made in the settings is the type of test for which the test matrix is made. There are three types of tests to choose from, two of which are formative forms and one summative form:

  • Practice (formative)
  • Graded practice (formative)
  • Exam (summative)
Note!

When the type of blueprint is set to 'Exam', this cannot be changed later. However, it is possible to create a variant of the blueprint and save it as a different 'type' and then detach it from the original blueprint.

When a 'Practice' or 'Graded Practice' is chosen, it is possible to switch between these two types of formative tests later.

Practice
A practice is a form of formative testing which focuses on repetition and feedback (feedback on answers given). For example, it is possible to repeat the questions until the candidate has answered them correctly 1, 2 or 3 times in a row. With this setting, after the required number of correct answers, the question will no longer return and only the questions not yet answered correctly will be presented to the candidate. In this way, test training can be created, based on repetition and a focus on parts and questions not yet correctly made.

While taking the test, the candidate can see after each question whether it was answered correctly or incorrectly.

At the end of the test, the candidate is given a percentage of the questions answered correctly and incorrectly, and can view any questions he has answered incorrectly. It is also possible to give feedback.

Graded practice
A graded practice is almost similar to the 'Exam' type and can be used, for example, as a conditional test (formative). Unlike an 'Exam', a graded practice gives feedback (feedback on the answer given); you can choose whether this should be shown after each question or at the end of the practice test.

Exam
When 'Exam' type is selected, all questions are presented to the candidate once. If set, the candidate can skip a question during the test and answer it later (before the test is closed). The answers given can then be adjusted before the test is closed.
It can also be set up so that the candidate cannot go back to the previous question. This means that an answer cannot be corrected at a later time.

No feedback is given after the test. Depending on the choice to show this to the candidate, it can be set to show feedback on questions with the result.

Note!
There is another difference between Practice, Graded Practice and Exam. A blueprint of an Exam is only valid if the number of required questions can actually be asked (all questions selected must be approved). This is not the case for a Practice or Graded practice. A Practice or Graded practice remains valid even if fewer questions can be selected than specified in the test matrix.
